The old door (Below) had to be removed carefully so as not to damage the trimmers. After the door had been taken out, my partner and I then put the new door (Left) into the opening. However, since the new door was smaller then the old one, we had to add an another trimmer to the frame. Once the trimmer was in place, we then shimmed the door to tighten the fit.

Let there be Light!

The majority of the work done over the weekend consisted of installing one of two new windows into the wall, and putting in blocking. The blocking was added so that when we attach the sheetrock to the wall, it has something to hold onto.

Wall Out

The wall has been removed! We used a Saw-sa to cut the nails from the wall, that way the wall could be removed in two separate pieces. Then we set the 4 x 12 beam into place and installed the trimmers. My mentor gave me some Hurricane Hooks and Straps to fasten the beam to the rafters and top plate.

Support

My partner and I finished building the 2 x 4 supports for the roof. The beams run straight up to the rafters from the ground, and are held in place by a bottom plate. Two walls were needed, one on the outside of the room, and another on the inside to make sure that the roof does not sag when we remove the already existing wall.

Home Depot and Bracings

Went back to Home Depot to pick up the 2 x 4 x 10s that I forgot to get last time I was there. The newly purchased lumber will be used for the bracings for the rafters in the garage.

I started work on building them today

To Home Depot AWAY!

Went to Home Depot today to get some lumber for the garage. Picked up 12 2x4x8(s) and a few pounds of nails, then friend of my family kindly donated a 4x12x12 beam for supporting the roof of the garage.
